About Nutrient Manager for Cereal System

Nutrient Manager for Cereal System calculates the requirements of rice, maize, and wheat crops for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer based on the answers of the user to a series of questions about anticipated crop-growing conditions. It serves as a nutrient management calculator and teaching tool for use by researchers, educators, extension workers, input providers, and students.

Nutrient Manager for Cereal System can be accessed and used from the Web browser of a personal computer, smartphone, or tablet. The user selects answers to questions about crop-growing conditions for rice, maize, or wheat and then receives a calculated nutrient management guideline matching the selected crop-growing conditions.

After answering the questions, the collected information is stored on the computer, smartphone, or tablet until the device is connected to the Internet through a Web browser. Collected information is then transmitted via the Internet to the Nutrient Manager for Cereal System 'model', which calculates and transmits a nutrient management guideline within moments back to the computer, smartphone, or tablet. Each guideline provides an actionable and unique recommendation for the crop, which matches the location-specific cropping practices and conditions selected by the user.

The concept and framework for Nutrient Manager for Cereal System was developed by IRRI. The nutrient management guideline provided by Nutrient Manager for Cereal System is based on the principles of site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) as initially developed for rice through partnerships of IRRI with national agricultural research organizations in Asia.

Nutrient Manager for Cereal System provides the SSNM-based, nutrient management component in country- and crop-specific versions of Crop Manager developed by IRRI. Country-specific versions of Crop Manager currently available and under development in Asia include Rice Crop Manager, Rice-Wheat Crop Manager, Rice-Maize Crop Manager, Maize Crop Manager, and Crop Manager for Rice-based Systems. Each Crop Manager provides a farmer with a personalized fertilizer and crop management recommendation for specific fields.

Nutrient Manager for Cereal Systems complements Crop Manager by providing a general nutrient management guideline for locations and crops for which a Crop Manager is not available. Nutrient Manager for Cereal Systems will direct users in Asia to relevant available versions of Crop Manager.

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) does not endorse or promote specific agricultural inputs and fertilizers, and it does not guarantee the accuracy of an analysis labeled on commercial agricultural input and fertilizers. The software assumes that the N, P₂O₅, and K₂O analysis labeled on a bag of fertilizer or organic material accurately reflects the content of plant nutrients. Many factors beyond the scope of Nutrient Manager for Cereal Systems - such as climate and water availability - affect rice, maize, and wheat yield. IRRI does not guarantee a targeted crop yield will be attained with the provided nutrient management guidelines. The content of the software is subject to change without notice.

Instructions for using Nutrient Manager for Cereal Systems

1. To start, select on a language (Sinhala or English). If it is your first time to access Nutrient Manager for Cereal Systems, this will be the first page you see. If not, you can access with the button, located on the bottom left of the page, then click on Language.
2. Answer questions for the farmer's field in the order that they appear on the screen. A plot could be one parcel or several parcels with similar management, variety, and soil fertility. Select an answer from a list of choices by clicking or ticking, or typing the answer into the provided box.
3. Use the scroll bar on the right side of the page with questionnaire to go back to a previous question.
4. After all questions have been answered, click on the button that will appear on the bottom right of the page. If online, a recommendation page with the crop management guideline will be generated. This guideline is based on the answers to the questions. If offline, the user will be asked to save the collected information. The collected information will be saved as a pending input file. When connected to the internet, click on the button, click on the Pending input files folder then select the file to generate the recommendation.
5. The recommendation page typically provides a guideline for the expected grain yield (on a dry weight basis) of the farmer by the farmer. The expected grain yield is attainable with good agronomic management practices for the given variety, season, and location.
6. The recommendation page contains a button. Click on the Save button to save the recommendation. Click on the Menu button, click on the Saved farmer guidelines folder to see the saved recommendation.
7. After saving the recommendation, the following buttons appear in the output page:
   1. - for printing the recommendation
   2. - for sharing the recommendation as an e-mail
   3. - ffor downloading the recommendation as pdf. For smartphones, a pdf reader (Adobe Acrobat, Polaris, or Hancom) must be installed to open the downloaded file.
8. The recommendation page can be printed as follows:
   1. For desktop or laptop computer: Click on the button below the recommendation page.
   2. For smartphone: Connect phone to a computer connected to a wireless printer. Mobile print app must be installed in the phone for wireless printing. Find the file from the Gallery or File folder then print.
9. To start developing a new recommendation, click the button and select Start new session

Questionnaire forms for using Nutrient Manager for Cereal Systems

Questionnaire forms listing all the questions in Nutrient Manager for Cereal Systems can be printed in the desired language or dialect and then used for interviewing farmers at remote locations with no internet access.

The information collected with a questionnaire form can then be entered into Nutrient Manager for Cereal Systems to obtain a crop management guideline for the interviewed farmer.
