About Nutrient Manager for Rice

Nutrient Manager for Rice is a computer- and mobile phone-based decision support tool, enabling the rapid development of fertilizer guidelines for specific rice fields. It contains questions, which can be quickly answered with existing knowledge of farmers and technicians. After answering the questions, a printable fertilizer guideline is provided.

Nutrient Manager for Rice is based on the principles of site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) as described in the following publication:

These principles of SSNM arise from nearly 15 years of research involving partnerships of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) with organizations across Asia. Within Bangladesh, long-standing collaboration of IRRI with the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) contributed to the formulation of SSNM principles and to the consolidation of knowledge, which made the development of Nutrient Manager for Rice possible.

Scientists from the Agronomy, Crop Physiology, Plant Breeding, Rice Farming Systems, and Soil Science Divisions within BRRI contributed technical information on traits of rice varieties, rice cultivation practices, and rice-growing environments, which were used in Nutrient Manager for Rice. Dr.Jiban Krishna Biswas, Director (Administration), BRRI and Dr. M. Murshedul Alam, IRRI Bangladesh contributed with the translations into Bangla language.

The Nutrient Manager for Rice provides nutrient management guidelines for rice in irrigated and favorable rainfed environments. The use of this software is subject to the following terms and conditions:

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) does not endorse or promote specific fertilizers and does not guarantee the accuracy of an analysis labeled on commercial fertilizers. The software assumes that the N, P₂O₅, and K₂O analysis labeled on a bag of fertilizer or organic material accurately reflects the content of plant nutrients. Many factors in addition to nutrients—such as climate, crop management, and water management—affect rice yield. IRRI does not guarantee a targeted rice yield will be attained with the provided nutrient management guidelines. The content of the software is subject to change without notice.

Limitation of liability

Under no circumstances and under no legal theory, whether tort, contract, or otherwise, shall the Board of Directors of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) or any of its affiliates, officers, employees, or other representatives be liable to you or any other person for any direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential damages of any character including, without limitation, damages for loss of goodwill, work stoppage, computer failure or malfunction, or any and all other commercial damages or losses, specifically including damages to crops and soil resulting from the application of the software, or for any damages or liabilities even if IRRI shall have been informed of the possibility of such damages or liabilities, or for any claim by any other party. Instructions for using Nutrient Manager for Rice

1. To start, click on a language (Bangla or English). If it is your first time to access the Nutrient Manager for Rice Bangladesh, this will be the first page you will see. If not, you can access it on the Menu button , located on the bottom left of the page, then click on Language
2. Answer questions in the order that they appear on the screen for your plot. A plot could be one parcel or several parcels with similar management, variety, and soil fertility. Select an answer from a list of choices by clicking or ticking, or typing the answer into the provided box.
3. To proceed to the next question, click on the button, located on the lower right of the page.
4. To go back to the previous question, click the button, located on the lower right of the page.
5. Once all the questions have been answered, a recommendation page with the fertilizer guideline will be generated. This guideline is based on the answers to the earlier questions.
6. The recommendation page typically provides fertilizer guidelines for an attainable yield level higher than the indicated yield by the farmer. The yield level is estimated as attainable with good agronomic management practices for the given variety, season, and location.
7. The recommendation page contains tools for:
   1. determining nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P₂O₅) and potassium (K₂O) rates
   2. viewing report with or without lcc use
   3. choosing other fertilizer materials
   4. sharing fertilizer recommendation as an email to the extension worker
8. To print the recommendation page using:
   1. desktop or laptop computer: Click the Tools icon in the menu bar and select Print
   2. smartphone: save recommendation in the phone as an image. Connect phone to a deskop or laptop connected to a printer. Find the image from the Gallery or File folder then print.
9. To start a new recommendation, click on the button and select Start new session. You may choose to collect information for another plot from the same farmer, or collect information from another farmer.

Questionnaire forms for using Nutrient Manager for Rice

Questionnaire forms listing all the questions in Nutrient Manager for Rice can be printed in the desired language and then used for interviewing farmers at remote locations with no internet access.

The information collected with a questionnaire form can then be entered into Nutrient Manager for Rice to obtain a fertilizer guideline for the interviewed farmer.
